A few months ago met Alex at the local Hobbytown, admiring his Black Templars and World Eaters, but until this week never had a chance to play him. Tuesday I played his BT with my Sons of Horus, and the next day we set up a match over at my house between the BT and my Word Bearers.
We used my city board and rolled up a 3-objective Seize Ground mission with Dawn of War deployment.

Alex wins the roll-off and places his two objectives towards his end of the table on opposite ends, mine goes closer to my side in the middle. He chooses to go first and deploys his Chaplain + terminator retinue in the middle and the fire support squad on my right, squatting on an objective.
I set up one Rhino squad and the DP on the opposite flank
The left-side objective is in the brass building down the road. In the distance you can see the other two - by the eagle statue and further on the one the BTs are guarding in the wrecked lander.
The battle:
Templars roll onto the field across from my DP and Rhino. Dread, Rhino w/EC's squad, speeder and assault squad+marshal. They get some good night fight rolls but only manage to shake the rhino. The termies advance in the middle and the other squad squats on the objective.
Hard to pierce the gloom...is that a twin-linked lascannon?
Word Bearers' turn - Rhino squad + Defiler on my right, then dread and vindicator in the middle. On my left the Rhino and DP back out of sight.
At this point my plan was pretty simple. Since he only had two troops, I would focus on getting rid of them or getting them out of position. One squad plus defiler should be plenty to take out his plasmacannon squad on my right, so everything else went towards trying to pull the rest of his army to the opposite corner and his rhino squad away from the other objectives. If things went OK, I should take the right-hand objective and have him too far away to claim any others. If things went well, might even wipe out his other troop squad. If things went amazingly well, might even be able to make it 2-0.
The Templars advance down the street, assault squad following behind the rhino.
Dread and speeder head the other way to try to deal with the walkers and armor. Plasmacannon manages to immobilize the right-hand side rhino.
Terminators form the other end of a pincer heading towards the DP. Assault cannon fire shakes the rhino again.
Chaos Terminators teleport in via icon homer and unleash combi-meltas into the BT rhino. Unfortunately no big casualty and fall-forward generating explosion, just a weapon destroyed and immobilized. Cheated of his Wind of Chaos+assault prey, the DP instead used WoC on the Rhino, getting another weapon destroyed result which upgraded to wrecked. BTs disembark, pass pinning check and are safely out of assault range.
Vindicator kills one terminator, and the rest fall towards it.
On the right, the defiler advances. Small daemon pack arrives and runs closer to the BTs, hoping to draw their fire for a turn. Rhino squad sits in relative safety, hoping for a repair roll to no avail.
Marshal + assault squad and EC + foot squad move up to engage the traitors.
Plasma pistols account for two terminators. In the assault the marshal kills two more, and the powerfist templar finishes the last one, who whiffs his own attacks. The Daemon Prince is out-zealed and falls to the blows of the Emperor's Champion and his comrades.
Meanwhile the small daemon pack is sent...packing back to the warp and the terminators wreck the Vindicator.
On the right, the defiler moves up in prep for fleeting and assaulting the templars in the wrecked ship. CSM squad abandons their rhino in disgust and follows the walker.
Defiler rolls for fleet...and gets one inch, leaving him out of assault range.
Seeing a Chaplain of the Corpse God, the interred heretic in the dreadnought is seized by rage and storms towards the terminators, charging into them.
On the other end, rhino tank shocks both templar squads but fails to make either retreat. CSM and large daemon pack attack the templar assault squad.
The Marshal wreaks havoc among the traitors until he is smashed to the ground by the heretic champion's powerfist.
Landspeeder and dread fire across at defiler and immobilize it.
EC's squad moves to the aid of their imperiled battle-brothers, and the terminators finish off the Chaos Dread.
At this point, things look OK. The EC's squad is far away from any objective, and my CSM should be able to overrun the plasma squad before anyone can arrive to offer serious help. The CSM move up and unleash pistol and melta fire along with the defiler dropping a battlecannon shot on the defenders, hoping to weaken the squad a bit and forcing them to fall towards the CSM into assault range. Not. One. Casualty. In reply, the defiler gets destroyed by assault cannon fire and the plasma cannon rips the CSM apart, breaking them. With the last troop choice broken and under 50%, the Chaos cause is lost.
In the following turn the Templars on the left (EC, etc.) finish off their flank. Plasma cannon pops the rhino, and terminators finish off the fleeing squad with ease.
Victory for the Black Templars!
