Got in a few quickies with Alex...well, with his Black Templars!
We gave the Kill Team setup from the new Battle Missions book a whirl today, did two battles.
The field:
Battle 1:
In the red trunks, the Heretic Hammer, the Traitors with a one-two so old it's pre-heresy...The Word Bearers!
Thirteen CSM, one with flamer.
In the black trunks, the Crushin' Crusaders, the Two-plus Terrors...Black Templar Terminators!
Five basic Terminators, SB/PF.
I win the roll-off, so set up first, spread out in my table quarter. Having overrun the PDF aid station, the Word Bearers move out to try to envelop the Templars.
Responding to the distress call but suspicious, the terminators spread out and prepare to advance.
WB move out!
Their auto-senses picking up the enemy, the Templars split up. Two cover the left, two the right, and the sgt goes down the middle ready to support either pair of battle-brothers.
*BLAM*BLAM*BLAM*DAKKA*DAKKA*DAKKA* "Who goes there?" A flurry of stormbolter rounds fell two Word Bearers crossing in the open.
(Here we demonstrate what I think should be a rule in Kill Team - leave the bodies where they fall, unless they get in the way. Don't sanitize the field.)
On the other flank, bolter fire takes down one Terminator, but the other presses on.
Termies group together to ram down the middle. The sgt blasts apart a traitor down the field...
...but concentrated bolt fire clears the WB left flank.
Word Bearers erupt from the ruins! The terminators shrug off the bolt-fire, but the point man soon finds himself trying to fend off two traitors in close combat.
Neither side manages to land a fatal blow, and the Templars move in to help their brother.
Chainswords prove no match for powerfists.
The Templars have bashed through the center, but there are more Word Bearers lurking in the wings.
Promethium washes over two terminators, killing one! The traitors charge the survivor, and a bolt pistol takes out the other remaining terminator.
The sole survivor makes his break tests and is being dog-piled by chaos marines.
After losing a few more marines, the Word Bearers have to start taking tests as well. They pass the first one, but blow the second on an 11 and leave the terminator to tend to his fallen comrades and their wargear.
Battle Two!
The Templars swap out the terminators for a five-man BP/CCW squad, and a five-man assault squad with two plasma pistols.
Facing them is a Tau force consisting of four stealth suits and 11 Kroot.
Kroot spread out and stealth suits help cover the flanks.
Templars prepare to purge the xenos.
Kroot take up positions as the Templars advance.
Kroot rifles take out one marine.
Assault marines jump to the side of the Kroot line and fire up the plasma pistols.
And both manage to overheat and kill themselves.
Another assault marine engages the Kroot on the far end of the line.
Bolt pistol and Kroot rifle fire both claim victims.
Despite his brother being cut down, the other attacking jump-pack marine makes it to the Kroot, but finds them well-prepared.
On the far left of the Kroot line, the remaining assault marine proves a better swordsman.
He follows up and assaults the main Kroot line, but fares no better than his predecessors.
One marine left! He passes his break tests and shoots down a Kroot as he advances. Soon however a hail of burst cannon fire finishes him off.
Kill Team was fun. Look forward to doing some more. We didn't use optional "specialists" rule where you can give three guys USRs, but that could be interesting to try.
Even though models can go out on their own, you should still give them backup. One guy will invariably miss or flub his close combat attacks. Use the buddy system. ^_^
We had a range of guys, from Terminators to Kroot. Both seemed to work fine, so I don't think there's any particular edge to elites vs. hordes, at least from what we saw.
Hope to do some other games with a bit more multi-level terrain, so we can have some snipers get into the mix too.
Cheers for two incredibly gruesome confrontations. I particularly like the "don't sanitize the field" theory.
ReplyDeleteI love these write ups. Again it's great to see some BT in action- there's almost none anywhere near me to look at/watch.
ReplyDelete@b.smoove - I think it's a good idea where possible. It really helps show the story of the fight, and you can see where the killing grounds were.
ReplyDelete@Lo - Glad you like them. Only a couple more of the Bash from the Past series to go, but undoubtedly new batreps to come. Alex is a great BT player and his army is very pleasant to see on the field. He also has a great World Eater army, and is probably knee-deep in Dark Eldar at the moment.
