Codex: Khorne Daemonkin

So, I've had a once-through on the Khorne Daemonkin book.  Some initial thoughts:

The book itself is well put together, with lots of nice photos and pieces of artwork, some recycled but some new.  Still in the ork-organized 7th ed horrid layout.  Army special rules on page 110, after all the units?  Really now.  The flipping required building a list is insane.  I plan to copy some of the detachment and cost pages to avoid the madness.

As the name implies, this is a book about Khorne, and includes not only chaos marines but daemons as well, all Khorne-flavored.  Everything is either a daemon of Khorne or has the Mark of Khorne built-in or is something that neither would apply to (for example a Rhino).  If you're looking for a fairly interesting way to mix in Khorne CSM and Khorne Daemons, this may be for you.

Merkan 76th Imperial Guard vs. Sisters of Battle

The Thin Green Line

Got a game in with Doug's Sisters of Battle, 1850pts, Maelstrom of War mission.  Not a terribly tactical game, me shooting, moving up a bit towards some middle objectives but trying not to do so too early and get massacred, him moving units up to get his flamers and meltas into range while trying to knock out anti-air guns with his exorcists.  The mission we played had you start out with six cards and the max you could have went down one each turn.  In theory this would have you be very aggressive early, in practice it meant I scored a couple points for objectives I was on initially, then was stuck with cards for objectives across the table with no real prospect for changing them out.  Yay, Maelstrom.  This was certainly not the army build for a Maestrom game, especially when it ended up as hammer and anvil deployment.  Still had a fun time and had some good moments in-game, but after the first turn and seeing the cards we both had I was not expecting to do well.  Tels sont les jeux.

I set up first, and spread bodies along the flanks to keep outflanking immolators coming up on the sides of my tanks.

Legendary Units, part deux

Our campaign using the original Legendary Units rules is over now.   It quickly became apparent that the Survival chart was too popular, so in this version I've replaced it with a Leadership chart instead.  I left the terrain generator in even though it didn't see much use.

Adjust to taste - you may find that you prefer for it to take longer for units to earn upgrades, for Legendary Units not to start with one, or do away with Legendary Units altogether and just let all units start from the same point.  If you do end up using some form of it, let me know how it goes!

Triad Cluster battle report: Orks vs. Space Wolves, the finale

We had the last battles for our Triad Cluster campaign a few weeks ago.  Here's some pictures, better late than never!  I played against Scott's Space Wolves, with Vanguard Strike deployment and we each had one objective to protect.

40K Scenario: Local Initiative

The situation at the front is fluid, and high command has authorized leaders at the scene to take the initiative in determining key locations and objectives.

This is an objective-based scenario where the objectives are placed by the players over the course of the game and can score points from them on multiple turns.

At the beginning of your turn check to see what objectives you control.  For each objective you control, you can either score 1VP or you can choose to destroy the objective.  After this, if it is turn 2, 3, or 4 you place one new objective on the table.  The objective placed must be within 3" of a model in a scoring unit, more than 12" from any other already placed objective, and more than 6" from any board edge.  If you cannot place the objective due to no scoring units or no valid place to put the objective it is lost, but if there is a valid placement it must be placed.

Standard rules around objectives, night fighting, random turn length are used and standard secondary objectives of First Blood, Slay the Warlord, and Line Breaker are in effect.
