League opening lists



Initial thoughts on initial (1000pt) lists for the new 40K league.  Still undecided about which army to bring, still welcoming your thoughts!  These lists are for the three top contenders in my eyes, the Merkan 76th Imperial Guard, the Chaos-worshiping Scythiak Usurpation, and the Orks of Kaptin Krumpa.

I expect to see Necrons, Orks, several Eldar, Chaos Marines, Marines, Grey Knights, Tyranids plus maybe a few others.


Merkans

Fortification - Aegis Line, Quad Gun (100)

HQ - Company Command Squad, regimental standard, heavy bolter, krak grenades (80)

Troops - Platoon
     Platoon CO - 2xGL, Krak (45)
          +Chimera, Multilaser/Heavy Flamer (55)
     Infantry Squad, Plasmagun (65)
     Infantry Squad, Plasmagun (65)
Troops - Platoon

Heavy weapons and CO man the line while infantry squads and vehicles move up on midfield objectives.  Orders as needed to either improve shooting or Get Back in the Fight after taking 2+ cover.


Scythiak

Heavy weapons and a squad sit with line, psyker with Ogryn to boost, Ogryn and squads move up, Sentinel outflank to try to grab linebreaker and take rear armor shots.
Orks

Fortification - Aegis Line, Quad Gun (might drop it for a dakkajet if I get one soon, but some extra cover and long range firepower is nice) (100)

HQ - Big Mek, KFF, eavy armor (90)

Troops - 30xShoota boys, 3xbig shootas, nob with eavy armor, big choppa, bosspole (220)

Troops - 10xGretchin, runtherd (40)

Troops - 10xShoota boys (60)

Fast - 2xDeffkopta, TL rokkits (90) (may split into two units of one each if don't take dakkajet)

Fast - 6xWarbikers, nob with powerklaw and bosspole (190)

Heavy  - 3xKilla Kans, skorcha, big shoota, grotzooka (125)
Heavy - 3xLobbas, 2xammo grots (81)

(996pts total)


Grots, lobbas and small boyz mob hold the fort while the rest goes stompin', with Mek trying to cover the walkers.

What would you rather read about?

  1. Are you giving Power weapons/Axes to any of the Guard officers? Or is the plan to keep them out of close combat as much as possible?

    I think the Merkans have a better chance against terminators and monstrous creatures with their load out of high strength, low ap weapons. I also think the Scythiak will be more fun to play because of including the psyker and the scout sentinel for out flanking. The Orks have the numbers and unit options to hit about anything you might face.

    So I would go Orks first, then Scythiak, then Merkans.

  2. No power weapons, at least at this point level. Outside of a blob, sgts are doomed in challenges.

  3. I see where you are coming from now. I haven't really played any 6th edition games with a pure Imperial Guard army yet.

  4. Right now I'm thinking I'll go with the Merkans. A number of armies will just crush me, and I'll have a real hard time getting linebreaker until I add some units for that purpose, but it's been a while since I've used them on a regular basis.
